Daily Mail and General Trust

Daily Mail and General Trust plc (DMGT) is one of the world’s largest media companies. It operates in over 100 countries, and has six autonomous divisions and a combined workforce of 15,000 people. Its businesses include national and provincial newspapers, commercial radio, exhibition companies, business-to-business publishing and information groups.
In December 2006, DMGT decided to upgrade its carbon management activities. As well as initiating an annual measurement of the Group’s carbon inventory, DMGT employed The Green Consultancy to help reduce carbon emissions and other environmental impacts, and ensure legal compliance. To date, our work with DMGT has included the following.
October 2010
Following extensive support from The Green Consultancy to help improve its energy and carbon management, DMGT achieved the Carbon Trust Standard.
2009 onwards: Carbon Reduction Commitment
“As well as requiring DMGT to undertake actions to comply, CRC participation is an opportunity to reassess and improve our energy reduction strategy. We prefer to see CRC as an opportunity rather than a cost and are working with the Green Consultancy to help us capitalise on the opportunity. We are very pleased with the work that they are doing to: advise us on the impact of CRC, given the complications of our corporate structure and our CCAs; to manage CRC for us; and to help us to reduce carbon emissions.”
Dr Rick Stunt Group Paper Director, Associated Newspapers Ltd
2009 onwards: ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standard
In support of DMGT’s upgraded carbon management approach, The Green Consultancy successfully led the implementation of ISO 14001 at all production sites and now provides ongoing support at Northcliffe House, DMGT’s London headquarters.
"I would have no hesitation in recommending The Green Consultancy as the quality of their consultant’s work in guiding us towards ISO 14001 accreditation has been excellent. I would add that he has worked hard at developing ongoing relationships with my entire team which has focused minds on the benefits and rewards of achieving the accreditation."
Paul Phelan, Head of Facilities, London Headquarters
2007 onwards: Energy Management Services at DMGT's headquarters
The Green Consultancy provides ongoing outsourced Energy Management Services at DMGT’s London headquarters building. We have overseen the installation of more efficient equipment and a new Building Management System, and we have improved the control of equipment by staff on site.
As a result, we have reduced electricity costs by almost £1M (about 25%) over four years as follows.

2009: EPBD Air Conditioning Inspection at HQ
The Green Consultancy provided its Compliance Plus service with guaranteed energy and carbon savings, and identified the opportunity to increase energy efficiency by 24%. This equates to annual savings of 4,544 MWh, 2,500 tonnes of CO2 and £317,000.
2008: Energy Efficiency Audits at Print Works
In recognition of the quality of the work we had undertaken, DMGT awarded The Green Consultancy the contract to undertake Investment Grade Energy Efficiency Audits at eight principal production plants. These sites produce over one third of greenhouse gas emissions for the whole Group. With a tight deadline to satisfy DMGT’s capital expenditure timetable, The Green Consultancy identified potential energy saving opportunities worth about £1.3 million per year, with a simple payback period of under one year. Based on our recommendations, DMGT approved the necessary capital expenditure budgets.

2006: Policy, Audits and Design at HQ
The Green Consultancy carried out an Energy Efficiency Audit of DMGT’s London Headquarters Building; with energy spend of over £1m a year. This survey identified annual savings of £172k and other opportunities needing further investigation. We then advised on energy policy & strategy, boiler refurbishment and the design of new chiller systems.
“The work undertaken for DMGT demonstrates the very high technical aptitude of the Green Consultancy within the area of energy management”.
