Daily Mail and General Trust

The Organisation

The Daily Mail and General Trust plc (DMGT) is one of the largest media companies in the world with six autonomous Divisions and a combined work force of 15,000 people.  DMGT operates in over 100 countries worldwide with businesses ranging from National and Provincial newspapers, Commercial radio, Exhibition companies, Business to Business publishing and Information Groups.

Carbon Management

In December 2006 DMGT decided to upgrade its activities with regard to the Group's overall carbon management.  The first stage was to measure the group's carbon inventory, which was completed by June 2007.  The second stage is identifying key areas where the inventory can be reduced, either by `best practice' or capital expenditure.

The Green Consultancy’s Involvement

2009-10: Carbon Reduction Commitment
“As well as requiring DMGT to undertake actions to comply, CRC participation is an opportunity to reassess and improve our energy reduction strategy.  We prefer to see CRC as an opportunity rather than a cost and are working with the Green Consultancy to help us capitalise on the opportunity.  We are very pleased with the work that they are doing to: advise us on the impact of CRC, given the complications of our corporate structure and our CCAs; to manage CRC for us; and to help us to reduce carbon emissions.”
Dr Rick Stunt Group Paper Director, Associated Newspapers Ltd

2009-10: ISO 14001

In support of DMGT’s upgraded carbon management approach, The Green Consultancy successfully lead the implementation of ISO 14001 at all production sites and is providing ongoing support at its London Headquarters.

"I would have no hesitation in recommending The Green Consultancy as the quality of their consultant’s work in guiding us towards ISO 14001 accreditation has been excellent.  I would add that he has worked hard at developing ongoing relationships with my entire team which has focused minds on the benefits and rewards of achieving the accreditation."
Paul Phelan, Head of Facilities, London Headquarters

2007-11: Energy Management Services at HQ
The Green Consultancy provides ongoing outsourced energy management services at DMGT’s London Headquarters Building and has so far reduced electricity consumption, costs (originally over £1M pa) and carbon emissions by the following amounts.

 Year

2008 1,564 105    850
2009 3,069 281 1,669
2010 (8 months only) 2,197 234 1,195

2008: Energy Efficiency Audits at Print Works

In recognition of the quality of the work undertaken to date, DMGT awarded The Green Consultancy the contract to undertake Energy Efficiency Audits at eight principal production plants, with a tight deadline to satisfy DMGT's Capex timetable.  These sites produce over one third of Greenhouse Gas emissions for the whole Group.  The Green Consultancy identified potential energy saving opportunities worth about £1.3 million per year with a simple payback period of under one year.  Based on our recommendations DMGT approved the necessary Capex budgets.

2006: Policy, Audits and Design at HQ
The Green Consultancy carried out an Energy Efficiency Audit of DMGT’s London Headquarters Building; with energy spend of over £1m a year.  This survey identified annual savings of £172k and other opportunities needing further investigation.  We then advised on energy policy & strategy, boiler refurbishment and the design of new chiller systems.

The work undertaken for DMGT demonstrates the very high technical aptitude of the Green Consultancy within the area of energy management”.
