Carbon Management Plan (CMP)

Carbon Management Plans are increasingly required to demonstrate intent in carbon reduction in line with government targets.  For example, the UK Higher Education Funding Councils are making university funding dependent on the production of a CMP.

They are also essential to plan compliance with legislation such the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.

A CMP should identify the organisation’s current carbon emissions, together with a logical series of technical and managerial steps that must be taken in order to arrive at the required reduction target.  The optimum starting point for this is usually an Investment Grade Energy Efficiency Audit.

Unfortunately, many CMPs are based on “walkthrough” surveys, which don’t get to grips with the most important energy efficiency issues, and “bolt on” projects that:

  • Have not been holistically evaluated and/or
  • Are oversized and/or
  • Deserve a much lower priority

Typically CMPs are blind to 20-30% of savings opportunities which are often much more cost-effective to implement than many in the plan.

TGC avoids these pitfalls and many others by using a scientific systems approach to deliver robust CMPs that can be trusted to deliver the carbon reductions required as cost-effectively as possible.

TGC produces new CMPs and reviews existing ones as a desk-top exercise – with methodology similar to an Energy Status Review but without site surveys.  Some clients commission us to review their CMP and then replace it with a new one when its inadequacies become apparent.
