Carbon Footprinting

Ten years ago Carbon Footprint was an arcane term hardly ever heard; now it even features in consumer advertising for potato crisps.

A Carbon Footprint is a measure of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) produced by a country, organisation, individual, event or a product.

The total annual footprint of an organisation covers a wide range of direct and indirect sources such as:

  • Fuel use in buildings and transport (direct)
  • Gas emissions from processes (direct)
  • Power station emissions associated with electricity consumed (indirect)
  • Emissions up and down the supply chain (indirect)
  • Customer and staff travel (indirect)

Carbon Footprinting is the process of measuring a Carbon Footprint and the main proposes of this are to:

  • Manage and reduce the footprint
  • Report it accurately to third parties such as investors or customers
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and marketing

Key issues in carbon footprinting are:

  • Determining what emissions are to be included in the footprint within the rules of an international standard
  • Deciding how to quantify the emissions
  • Setting up systems for ongoing data collection

The Green Consultancy advises on all aspects and at all stages and can implement part or all of the process.

UK Standard for Goods and Services

The Green Consultancy offers Carbon Footprinting of goods and services to PAS 2050.  Launched by BSI British Standards, the Carbon Trust and the Environment Department (DEFRA), this is the world’s first standard to measure embedded greenhouse gases

The standard requires firms to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions embedded in products in a consistent way.  It takes into account emissions generated from the sourcing of raw materials, during manufacturing and processing, during distribution, in the use-phase and on disposal.

The standard has been designed to help firms better understand the carbon impact of their products and identify tangible opportunities to reduce it.  It will also provide a common basis through which consumers can compare the embedded emissions of similar products.
