Maplin Electronics
ESOS Compliance
“The ESOS Lead Assessor has good retail expertise, was very personable and got on very well with my team. Findings were presented in a commercial way with costs and savings.”
Chris Bannister, Financial Controller
The company
Maplin is a retailer of electronic goods in the UK and Ireland. It was founded in 1972 and by January 2016, had 218 stores and a multi-channel service via its web platform.
The challenge
Maplin came under the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) legislation as it met the Environment Agency’s definition of a ‘large undertaking’ on 31 December 2014.
TGC was appointed to support legal compliance and had easy access to the company’s consumption data because its energy is procured by our parent company ECA Group.
The solution
TGC provided a Lead Assessor with expert knowledge of the retail sector who undertook the entire compliance process including energy audits of 10 sample retail stores, head office and the logistics/distribution centre.
The stores selected were of varying sizes and types in different locations. They also had AMR meters, which provided useful audit data. Two visits were made to the head office and logistics/distribution centre: one during normal office hours and one at night between 21:00 and 03:00. This provided valuable insights on overnight electricity use and more easily identified savings.
The results
The deliverables were:
- ESOS Summary Assessment Report
- 10 retail ESOS Audit Reports
- Head office/logistics ESOS Audit Report
- ESOS Evidence Pack containing all reports and data
- Presentation at Director level
- Support for completing notification of compliance to the Environment Agency well before the 5 December 2015 deadline.
One of the key recommendations was to install more LED lighting. A limited LED roll-out was already underway and has now been extended to half of the estate, with the remainder to follow.
In the head office and logistics/distribution centre, the identified savings for gas and electricity were 35% valued at £76,600 per annum and with a payback of less than 2 years.
If the savings identified in the 10 audited stores were implemented energy consumption would be significantly reduced, saving £786,000 per annum.
The graph shows the average daily electrical load of a typical store and the pie chart shows how that is consumed.
The reaction
“The ESOS Lead Assessor has good retail expertise, was very personable and got on very well with my team. Findings were presented in a commercial way with costs and savings. They looked sensible and we will use them as benchmarks as we start to implement the recommendations. TGC’s administration is very good and visits were arranged with minimal fuss.”
