The challenge
The theoretical case for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is compelling at first sight but unfortunately the reality is often far from ideal and very many installations are not saving the promised money or carbon – although the owners may be blissfully unaware of this!
The service
A Green Consultancy CHP Feasibility Study is a full investment grade investigation of all factors affecting efficiency and cost-effectiveness. It provides an in depth analysis of the proposed system, costs and return on investment.
A CHP expert will visit the site to:
- asse
ss of the existing thermal demands and the efficiency thermal plant in order to establish the thermal load profile of the building or system
- consider the optimum type and size of CHP unit
- investigate all operating costs and the contract if the CHP is to be operated by a third party.
For buildings at the design stage, or under construction, these investigations will be based on theoretical figures obtained from analysis of the theoretical heat losses from the building through fabric and ventilation, including consideration of likely hot-water demands.
The report will include:
- recommendations
- estimated savings, costs and return on investment
- table of prioritised actions.
Our fee for this service depends on the scale and complexity of the system.

District Heating Optimisation and Redesign for University of Bristol
“The Green Consultancy redesigned the District Heating System at our Langford site to dramatically improve its energy efficiency. Their consultant gave a clear and concise explanation of the new design and answered all questions from the team charged with progressively implementing and commissioning the new design in a way that fully inspires our confidence in the results. At last we have someone who understands CHP and thermal stores, rather than having just read about them in a book and made up a design as they go along!”
Dave Baker, Mechanical Building Services Engineer
