Carbon footprinting3450_12-img-200x265-14 - - becky

Ten years ago ‘carbon footprint’ was an unfamiliar term, but now it even features in consumer advertising for potato crisps.  The Green Consultancy advises on all aspects of the carbon footprinting process, and can implement part or all of it.

Measuring your carbon footprint

A carbon footprint measures the total greenhouse gas emissions caused directly and indirectly by a person, organisation, event or product.

It is measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) in compliance with the World Resources Institute’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol - the global standard for carbon footprinting.

Measuring the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) allows the 6 main greenhouse gases to be compared on a like-for-like basis relative to one unit of CO2. It is calculated by multiplying the emissions of each of the six greenhouse gases by its 100-year global warming potential (GWP).

The total annual footprint of an organisation or activity can cover a wide range of direct and indirect sources of GHG emissions. In compliance with the GHG Protocol these are categorised as follows.

Scope 1 – direct emissions, such as from:

  • fuel use in buildings and transport
  • gas emissions from processes

Scope 2 – indirect emissions, such as from:

  • power station emissions associated with electricity consumed

Scope 3 – indirect emissions, such as from:

  • up and down the supply chain
  • customer and staff travel

Carbon footprinting is the process of measuring a carbon footprint. This is increasingly done to:

  • help manage and reduce carbon emissions as part of energy efficiency measures to reduce costs and business risks
  • report it accurately to third parties such as investors or customers for assurance purposes
  • meet corporate responsibility (CR) objectives and for marketing purposes
  • meet mandatory reporting requirements such as Carbon reduction commitment (CRC)

Key issues in carbon footprinting are:

  • determining what emissions are to be included in the footprint within the rules of an international standard
  • deciding how to quantify the emissions
  • setting up systems for ongoing data collection, validation and reporting

The Green Consultancy advises on all aspects of the carbon footprinting process, and can implement part or all of it.

We also undertake third party carbon footprint validation 4_cdp-logo-200px-opt - Peter Hawtin - peterhand assurance, e.g. for CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project) to enable clients to meet supply chain requirements set by their major customers and stakeholders

UK standard for goods and services

The Green Consultancy also offers carbon footprinting of goods and services to PAS 2050 – the world’s first standard to measure embedded Scope 3 greenhouse gases.

The standard requires organisations to calculate the life-cycle emissions embedded in products in a consistent way, in accordance with the GHG Protocol. It considers emissions generated from the sourcing of raw materials, during manufacturing and processing, during distribution, in use, and on disposal.

The standard enables companies to understand the carbon impact of their products and identify tangible opportunities to reduce it. It also provides a common basis for consumers to compare the embedded emissions of similar products.
