State of the art eco-design

Eco-design is concerned with reducing the environmental impact and costs of products or packaging.  We do this by identifying which aspects of the product/packaging life cycle have the greatest environmental burdens and then reduce them. This generally involves a reduction in the use of resources and therefore costs.

Our five-step eco-design methodology is summarised below.

Step 1: Review current product and/or packaging

This stage will review the product and packaging and map the suppliers and raw materials used, define use patterns and begin to understand the lifecycle impacts. We will also examine the existing design brief.

Step 2: Assess product and/or packaging impacts

We will identify the environmental and carbon impacts across the product/packaging life-cycle and identify the stages of the lifecycle that have the greatest environmental impacts. We will use information from the company and analyse the cost of materials using our proprietary carbon and lifecycle impact software. This will provide both a benchmark and a way of prioritising design improvements. This quantification is essential to provide rigour to the qualitative work that will follow.

Step 3: Recommendation of design improvements

We will make recommendations for improvements in design, materials and processes. Factors considered will include:

  • Raw material type
  • Manufacturing techniques
  • Production speed and reliability
  • Transportation systems
  • Product use and life span
  • Disassembly/disposal
  • Product protection
  • Brand integrity

We will model the benefits in terms of financial, carbon and other environmental savings.

Step 4: Focus groups

In order to assess the consumer impacts of a new product/pack design we undertake detailed focus group activity with your target audience. There’s no point in greening your product if it doesn't sell.

Step 5: reporting

Final report and presentation detailing environmental and cost benefits, design options and design strategy. We will benchmark improved product/pack design against the historic design.
