Lancaster University District Heating Feasibility Studies

Lancaster has one of the oldest and most extensive 3448_lancs-logo-251 - John Treble - johnDistrict Heating Systems (DHS), but after fifty years of use and evolution as the University, it was not operating efficiently – as highlighted by our Building Management System (BMS) Health Check. In addition, the university required feasibility studies for specific projects.

TGC successfully carried out the following investigations:

  • Thorough survey of the system, comprehensive analysis of all relevant data and thermal/hydraulic modelling.
  • Feasibility study into the separation of DHS heat generation and distribution.
  • Feasibility study into extending the DHS to the Infolab 21 Building.

There is major scope for both cost-effective expansion of the system and energy/carbon savings – the scale of which will depend on what combination of projects the University chooses to implement.

The university now has a sound basis on which to plan for the improvement and expansion of the DHS over the second fifty years of its life and we look forward to providing technical support to the resulting projects and ensuring their success. Read more ...
